Clinical Psychology

Clinical Psychologists undertake a full time three year Clinical Doctoral programme (this is subsequent to an undergraduate psychology degree and gaining adequate clinical experience to be accepted upon the training).

Through their Doctoral training Clinical Psychologists gain extensive experience in work with adults, families, children and young people with a wide range of complex emotional health difficulties. Most Clinical Psychologists also gain experience working with learning disabilities and older adults.

They become experienced in assessment (including psychometric assessment), formulation of an individual’s difficulties and treatment. A formulation makes links between an individual’s history and their presenting problems.

All Clinical Psychologists gain experience in therapeutic interventions based on various theoretical models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), family systems therapy approaches and psychodynamic approaches. Their broad clinical experience allows Clinical Psychologists to individually tailor treatment approaches according to individual or a family’s needs.
