Helen Pitman

Helen is an Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with 25 years of experience working with children, teenagers and parents. Children and young people may not have the language to express their experiences so they may communicate their distress through their behaviour. Psychotherapy can help them connect with, express, and develop language for their emotional difficulties. This can facilitate them feeling understood and therefore less isolated in their experience. Sometimes it can be difficult to access feelings through words alone, so I offer a variety of creative approaches such as: sand tray, art, and play therapy.

Helen believes being a parent is one of the toughest jobs of all. Understanding your child’s communications can be hard. Helen offers a space in which we can think together about your child and what they may be communicating to you through their behaviours in order to have less conflicted and more fulfilling relationships. This work can stand alone or can be built in to support the child or adolescent in psychotherapy.

Helen works in both private practice and as a school counsellor in both Primary and Secondary schools. Her work in schools has included working directly with children but also supporting parents in thinking about how to support their children through difficult periods in their lives.

Helen believes the therapeutic relationship has a wonderful potential to allow for the safe exploration of feelings. She believes that therapy is not something that is done to you it is a process that is entered together in order for you to begin to discover where you may be getting stuck in repeating patterns of behaviour.
