Mary Murphy Ford

Dr Mary Murphy-Ford, BA, MBBS, MRCPsych, MSc is a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy. Her main therapeutic modality is psychodynamic psychotherapy (individual and group) but she also has expertise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Systemic Family Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy. She has trained at the Tavistock Centre for both her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy advanced trainings. She is on the Specialist Register and is GMC registered.

She takes a holistic approach to an individual’s challenges, taking account not only of the physical and biological aspects, but also developmental stage, psychological and social factors. For children and young people there is always a strong focus on and liaison with school, family and wider networks. She offers treatment using a combination of psychological therapies and medication where appropriate.

Dr Murphy-Ford is experienced in supporting parents whose children are undergoing therapy and this may take the form of parenting work, individual psychotherapy or couples therapy for parents. She also undertakes therapeutic assessments and psychotherapeutic treatments for adolescents and adults in their own right.

In 2016 she moved to Devon where she works in the NHS as a Medical Psychotherapist in a therapeutic community for patients who have experienced Complex Trauma and have a Personality Disorder diagnosis. She is the Psychotherapy Tutor for Junior Doctors and the Training Programme Director for Psychotherapy. Previously she worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust as part of Camden’s Multi-Agency Liaison Team providing assessments, diagnoses and therapeutic interventions for Children in Care and families experiencing high levels of difficulty. From 2011-2014 she was Clinical Lead for the Neuro-developmental Team in a London CAHMS service and she has a special interest in the diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition in the context of trauma and attachment relationship difficulties.
